Some new sites I like

by Sasha on September 3, 2008

I started reading a new blog I thought you all may enjoy called ecofabulous and I’m adding it to my blogroll.  And thru the site I found an online store for natural beauty products,  futurenatural.

Started by a 20 year beauty and fashion industry professional I’m definitely interested in making some purchases.  Little by little I’ve been trying to find more natural replacements for all my beauty items and toiletries.  I don’t recommend going crazy and buying all new stuff just because they are natural.  Use what you have and as you run out maybe you’d like to try out a natural/organic alternative and see if it works for you.  Just like I try to limit the amount of things I purchase and bring into my home I also try to limit the amount of man-made chemicals I put into or on my body.

I’ve been successful in replacing most cleaning products and beauty items such as face and body moisturizers and toothpaste.  So now I’m looking to replace my makeup choices.  I have sensitive skin as well so I’m hoping by finding natural alternatives I can eliminate some of those reactions that occasionally occur for me.

There are many online and local resources to recycle old electronics and gadgets but how many actually offer you cash for your old goods? Welcome to recycling company Gazelle. Gazelle takes back items in the following categories.

  • Cell Phones
  • MP3 Players
  • Digital Cameras
  • Laptops
  • GPS Devices
  • Gaming Consoles
  • Camcorders
  • Satellite Radios
  • Portable Hard Drives

When first visiting the site you type in the item you want to recycle in their search box and then rate the item and check all the additional peripherals to go with it.  Your price is based on current market value. Once you agree to the price you either login if you’re a returning member or, you will register with the site. Once you complete that page you decide if you would like your payment by check, Paypal, or donated to a charity. How awesome is that? Three great choices I think.  They also pay for the shipping!  You will receive a prepaid box in the mail to ship the item to Gazelle.  Once received you will receive payment within a few days. Sounds like a great service. If anyone has used them I’d love to hear some feedback. Next time I need to get rid of an old gadget I’m going to try them out.

My posts about how to scan 35mm slides Part 1 and Part 2 have been some of my most popular to date. Now I’d like to share one idea about what to do with all those fabulous slides and digital photos you’ve archived and backed up a few times, right?!

I’ve been saving above image because I think it’s such a cool way to showcase a bunch of photos all at once. The photo features a room suite on the website for West Hollywood, CA boutique hotel Palihouse and to the left behind the couch is a massive, beautifully executed photo collage.  I love that it’s one huge piece of artwork comprised of smaller photos. You just have to hang up one large piece rather then measuring and painstakingly trying to arrange separate frames on a wall. I do like the look of clusters of photos and art but that’s for another post. I have lots of inspiration to share for wall arrangements.

For this kind of piece you’ll definitely have to visit a professional frame store but I think it would be so worth it. Next time I have a little extra cash in my pocket to spend I’m going to take this idea to the frame store.

Need a New Roof, Consider Standing-Seam Metal

by Sasha on August 27, 2008

I love finding new home renovation tips that I didn’t know existed. Today, Apartment Therapy featured a post on standing-seam metal roofs. First off, it looks great and works well with a traditional or modern designed home. You can choose from a few different styles to compliment the design of your home. Apparently, they are low maintenance and don’t need as much insulation as the standard shingle roof. Another great plus is metal can always be recycled so the environmental impact is way lower than asphalt shingles. The roofs can be created from recycled metal and if ever discarded it can go back to being recycled. I’m not a homeowner yet but I will definitely consider this material if I ever have to replace a roof or build my own place.

Declutter your closet

by Sasha on August 20, 2008

One my biggest fans sent me a closet de-cluttering idea from flylady.net and I think it’s great.

Testimonial:Tip For Clearing the Closet
Hello Ladies!

Recently I learned a great tip for painlessly cleaning out un-worn
clothing. Since we’re focusing on getting laundry this month I
thought I’d pass it along.

After you finish your laundry and are hanging stuff in the closet, put
the hanger on the rod *backwards* (with the opening in the hanger
facing you rather than the wall like they usually go). That way
you’ll have a quick visual indicator to what clothes you’re actually
*wearing*. After several weeks it will be very clear what you’re
wearing and what you’re not. Those items that aren’t being worn can
be passed along to bless someone else.

Thought this was a great tip! After doing it for a while I realized
that much of what was in my closet wasn’t being used, so I cleared it
out and have been slowly buying new, more in-style clothes instead.
Feels great!

This idea will work for your everyday clothes. Certain pieces of clothing like special occasion dresses and suits and seasonal items like coats obviously don’t apply. But I definitely think the poster is on to something with this tip.
